Front: Arch of the Alto de la Alianza at center, Jorge Basadre Grohmann at right, arms at upper right.  The Arch of the Alto is monument to the heroes of the War of the Pacific between Peru and Chile.  It is a national monument in Tacna, in southern Peru on the border with Chile.

Tacna's main plaza, Plaza de Armas, which is studded with palm trees and large pergolas topped by bizarre mushroom-like bushes, is a popular meeting place and has a patriotic flag-raising ceremony every Sunday morning.  It is flanked by larger-than-life bronze statues of Admiral Grau and Colonel Bolognesi.

Jorge Basadra Grohmann (February 12, 1903 – June 29, 1980) was a Peruvian historian who wrote extensively about the independent history of Peru.  He served as Minister of Education and was director of the The Biblioteca Nacional del Perú.  He was born in Tacna.

Back: The Biblioteca Nacional del Perú is the national library of Peru, located in Lima. It is the country's oldest and most important library. Like the majority of Peruvian libraries, it is a non-circulating library.

Back: Palace of Torre Tagle at left center.  The Torre Tagle Palace is a Spanish Baroque palace located at Jr. Ucayali 363, in downtown Lima, Peru, a couple blocks east of the Plaza de Armas. The palace currently is home to the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The palace was commissioned in 1715 (some say 1730) by Don Jose Bernardo de Tagle y Bracho: 1st Marqués of Torre Tagle, who at the time was treasurer of the Royal Spanish fleet, for his own personal use as his home.

Two examples of money exchange stamps on the back of Peruvian 10 New Soles notes.   The stamps indicate that the note has been check to be genuine.

Since 2009 the South American nation of Peru has become the new number one nation in the world to export the most counterfeit banknotes.  Counterfeiters has managed to make very good fake US and Peruvian currency.  They have even been able to print watermarks in a light gray which when held up to light looks like a real watermark. 

All cashiers and customers checks their banknotes before accepting them.  Damaged, soiled or banknotes with writing will not be accepted.  Some money exchange places stamp the back of their genuine banknotes before distribution.

This note is similar to P174 but without colored planchettes. 

Front: WW II era fighter plane as monument at upper center, José Abelardo Quiñones at right, arms at upper right, statue of a North American NA-50 simple single seat, low-wing, single engine fighter.  José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzáles (April 22, 1914 – July 23, 1941) was a Peruvian military aviator and national aviation hero. He died crashing his plane in a kamikaze attack during the Battle of Zarumilla in the Ecuadorian-Peruvian war. 

Back: A Boeing-Stearman Model 75 a biplane used as a military trainer aircraft in the 1940s.  The biplane is inverted signifying the pilot's death.

Front: Hipolito Unanue, (August 13, 1755–July 15, 1833) was a physician and president of Peru for a short nine-month period in 1825. at right. National coat of arms at center.

Back: Medical college at San Fernando at left center part of The National University of San Marcos. It is the most important and respected higher-education institution in Peru. Its main campus, the University City, is located in Lima. It was chartered on May 12, 1551 by a royal decree signed by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, which makes it the oldest officially established university in the Americas and, as such, one of the oldest universities in the world.
