Canada's northern regional claim has been disputed in recent years by the United States (Alaska), Russia, Denmark (Greenland), and Norway. The legal status of the Northwest Passage is disputed: Canada considers
it to be part of its internal waters according to the United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea. Any navigation through the Northwest Passage will take ships through Canadian territorial waters between northern arctic islands. The United States and other nations consider it an international strait and have right of passage. Since 2007 with the melting of the Arctic shelf this water way has become fully navigable.
