Front: Arch of the Alto de la Alianza at center, Jorge Basadre Grohmann at right, arms at upper right.  The Arch of the Alto is monument to the heroes of the War of the Pacific between Peru and Chile.  It is a national monument in Tacna, in southern Peru on the border with Chile.

Tacna's main plaza, Plaza de Armas, which is studded with palm trees and large pergolas topped by bizarre mushroom-like bushes, is a popular meeting place and has a patriotic flag-raising ceremony every Sunday morning.  It is flanked by larger-than-life bronze statues of Admiral Grau and Colonel Bolognesi.

Jorge Basadra Grohmann (February 12, 1903 – June 29, 1980) was a Peruvian historian who wrote extensively about the independent history of Peru.  He served as Minister of Education and was director of the The Biblioteca Nacional del PerĂº.  He was born in Tacna.

Back: The Biblioteca Nacional del PerĂº is the national library of Peru, located in Lima. It is the country's oldest and most important library. Like the majority of Peruvian libraries, it is a non-circulating library.
